Unilever switches off for Earth Hour

Unilever joined more than 300 multinational companies in cutting lights to help raise awareness of the dangers of climate change.

Switching off the lights

Unilever joined businesses and individuals around the globe to switch off their lights for 60 minutes as part of the WWF Earth Hour initiative.

On Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30pm more than 300 multinational companies and iconic buildings cut the lights as part of the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change. WWF aimed to get one billion people to join in.

Coca-Cola, HSBC, Google and Ikea were among the other leading businesses taking part. World-famous sites such as the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls, Sydney Opera House and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro all joined the plunge into darkness.

Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing the planet, and demands urgent global action. Unilever has made good progress on carbon dioxide reductions, with CO2 emissions from energy per tonne of production down 39% over the past 14 years – and the business is committed to doing more.
